Purple Divination 

FEMINIST PSYCHIC READINGS - Egg Divination with Oracles of the Third Eye
We were invited to do a performance at the Kosmos Theater’s tenth anniversary extravaganza in Vienna, Austria. Kosmos is Europe’s only feminist theater of its kind. Dozens of other artists and performers would be performing throught the huge theater and its cafés/bars. Spring was coming. We were in the mood for eggs, new life, new hopes and dreams. We chose to perform in the spacious ticket booth, which we turned into a den of love. 



This would be our first performance in the purple year, so we painted our faces purple. But the paint didn’t work very well and we looked rather strange. Throughout the night we invited groups of four and five into our den of love and asked each person to pose a question. We then asked each person to choose a raw egg, from a basket of eggs we got from a lovely 85 year old Viennese witch. Each person would crack their egg into water and then we would look for signs and symbols in the glass together using flash lights and laser beams. Welcome spring! Then we would activate people’s third eyes by anointing them with essential oils, purple paint and glitter. Each got a blessing “may you attain great visions, and find the answers to your questions.” Because ultimately we can’t tell people the answers, they have to find them for themselves. That is the feminist way. Appointments were each 15 minutes. This piece was inspired by Linda M. Montano’s Art/Life tarot readings at the New Museum and by Hidden Mountain teaching us the ancient art of raw egg divination at the Women’s Visionary Council gathering in the summer of 2009.
